Doctoral Fellowships

The Ernst Schering Foundation supports outstanding young scientists who conduct basic research in biology, medicine or chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). Every year, it awards a total of approximately 7 fellowships to doctoral students who want to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad. By awarding the fellowships, the Ernst Schering Foundation acknowledges the past accomplishments of the young scientists and supports them in their future careers.

The fellowships are awarded for a two-year period.

As of April 2011, the fellowship amount is 1.300,00 EUR/month. Fellowship recipients who live abroad may be eligible for a cost-of-living adjustment, which will be calculated on the basis of the Federal Ministry of Finance rates that are valid at the time of the fellowship award. In addition, fellows receive a monthly materials allowance of 100,00 EUR to cover travel expenses, books, etc. For participation in a scientific conference, there will be an allowance of up to 1.000,00 EUR (to cover travel costs and registration fees). The children’s allowance is 400,00 EUR/month for the first child; for each additional child, the allowance is 300,00 EUR/month.

In the case of illness, the Ernst Schering Foundation continues its fellowship payments for 2 months. After that time the payments will cease until the fellow restarts his or her work. Upon recovery, the fellowship may be extended by the whole period of absence due to the illness.
