Stories on Gold - Pictorial Narrative in Italian Painting

03.11.2005, Berlin Picture Gallery | Stories on Gold transports visitors back into the pictorial worlds of important Italian painters such as Ugolino di Nerio, Fra Angelico, Masaccio and Ghirlandaio. In the period of transition from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance, they used the precious technique of gold-ground painting to create pictorial narratives whose vividness and narrative density still seem unique and virtually timeless.

Exhibition Opening: November 3, 2005

November 4, 2005–February 26, 2006

4. November 2005 bis 26. Februar 2006

It is therefore very fortunate that it was possible to bring together all preserved panels of the high altar of the Franciscan church Santa Croce in Florence, created by Ugolino di Nerio between 1325 and 1326. They are presented for the first time to the public as part of a full-scale reproduction of the altar. The exhibition pieces, depicting stories from the every-day life and intellectual world of the Renaissance, are an early testimony to the fact that images have always played an important role, not only in these times of modern means of communication.

Through its support, the Ernst Schering Foundation aims to contribute to making these special works and their cultural and historical significance accessible and understandable to the public.
