Oxidation of polyenoic fatty acids by lipoxygenases

The work describes the analysis of the lipid metabolism of polyenoic fatty acids in plants. For this purpose, different approaches from analytical chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology were used. In order to study functions of specific lipoxygenases (LOXs), their involvement in the degradation of storage lipids during germination and the degradation of chloroplastic membrane lipids during jasmonate- and stress-induced senescence was compared. In addition, lipid peroxidation reactions were analyzed by studying the biosynthesis of aldehydes, hydroxy polyenoic fatty acids and divinyl ethers. Moreover, molecular determinants at the active site of LOXs were analyzed which determine the positional specificity of these enzymes.
