Philipp Lachenmann: DELPHI Rationale

Re:Design – A Staged Reading

08.01.2009, Berlin | On January 24, 2009, the annual Salon Sophie Charlotte will take place at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). The Academy invites you to visit a place of research and stimulating encounters between science and art. Guided by the BBAW’s 2009 annual theme, “Evolution in Nature, Technology and Culture,” members and staff of the Academy as well as prominent guest speakers will search for traces of evolutionary processes from the origin of life to the future. One of the events is a staged reading of Re:Design, which is made possible with support from the Ernst Schering Foundation. Actors Leon Ullrich and Andreas Leupold will read from the correspondence of Charles Darwin and Asa Gray.

The play was written by Craig Baxter for the Darwin Correspondence Project at the University of Cambridge on the occasion of the Cambridge University Science Festival 2007. Directed by Ronny Jakubaschk from the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the performance at the BBAW will be the play’s premiere in the German-speaking world. Written in dialogic form, the play provides insights into Darwin’s researcher personality and self-doubts, stages in the development of the theory of evolution as well as the challenges to the theory. The reading will be accompanied by a video-artwork by Niklas Ritter. The staging will be documented on film which will be available for further use to institutions interested.

Admission is free. Reservations are not required.
